GM announces new plant to build electric cars in U.S.

GM announced yesterday that it will build a new plant in Baltimore to build electric motors and drive trains. The plant is partially being funded with a $105 million grant from the US Department of Energy and the stimulus plan. Add a comment

First high-speed rail in U.S. bound for Florida?

In exciting news for Florida and high-speed rail in the United States, it looks like President Obama will announce the first high-speed rail project coming out of the stimulus bill on a trip to Tampa on Thursday.

Effectively reducing waste: the bag tax

On January 1st, Washington, D.C. implemented a 5 cent bag tax on all disposable bags used at the store. Created in an effort to reduce litter and provide funds to clean up the nearby Anacostia River, the result of the tax has been a huge reduction in the use of bags across the city. Add a comment

Haiti: Moving from relief and recovery to sustainable reconstruction

As the dust begins to settle from the heartbreaking earthquake that struck Haiti last week, the problems will not be simplified, but made more complex. Relief and recovery efforts will need to continue for the foreseeable future, but rebuilding and reconstruction will need to begin as well. The question is not how to merely replace what existed previously, but to improve upon it.

The quest for a sustainable and peaceful world is much broader than just environmental sustainability. The Earth Charter's vision is one of prospering communities that are surmounting poverty and injustice. In the midst of this recession, many are struggling even more than before. And with the pending impacts of climate change on communities nearby and abroad, there is the potential for even more suffering. However, these challenges also hold opportunity.

With this week's commemoration of the struggles and accomplishments of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Oakland based organization Green for All announced its call for video, music, and art submissions that feature "inspiring examples of how the green economy is creating opportunity for prosperity and advancement in your community".
