International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation calls for increased cooperation to end the practice

Between 100 million and 140 million women and girls have undergone female genital cutting (FGC) and the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) says at least 3 million more women and girls are at risk every year. In an effort to put an end to the practice, which is an abuse of the basic rights of women and girls, and has severe health repercussions, leaving physical and psychological scars, UNFPA declared February 6th International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation.

Sustainable Purchasing: State and local laws can promote sustainable standards

The State of California alone purchases between $7-$10 billion worth of products and services a year. Add 49 more states, as well as local and federal governments, and that is a lot of buying power. Well California has taken the lead promoting responsible purchasing, mandating Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP). The state's Public Contract Code mandates the, "acquisition of goods and services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing goods or services that serve the same purpose. This comparison shall take into consideration, to the extent feasible, raw materials acquisition, production, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, reuse, operation, maintenance, disposal, energy efficiency, product performance, durability, safety, the needs of the purchaser, and cost.

1/4 of U.S. nuclear plants leaking radioactive tritium

It has been reported that currently 27 of the country's 104 operational nuclear reactors have been leaking radioactive tritium, contaminating surrounding groundwater. The Associated Press recently reported on the nationwide findings following a discovery at Vermont Yankee that the levels of radioactive tritium at a nearby monitoring well is 3 times the level deemed safe by federal regulators.

Emissions reduction pledges from Copenhagen will not be sufficient

While 55 countries met the goal to submit official pledges for emissions reductions to the UN by January 31st, the top climate adviser to secretary general Ban Ki-moon stated that these voluntary pledges are not likely to hold global temperatures below the target set at the Copenhagen climate conference.

Visualize Green: Mobile garden to be deployed on Chicago rail car

In some exciting news, one Chicago-based artist, Joe Baldwin, recently had his mobile garden project approved, providing Chicago commuters with the opportunity to "visualize the possibilities for enhancing green space in the city."
