LED Lights may light homes in less than 3 years
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), already used in electrical equipment such as computers and mobile phones, are several times more energy efficient than standard light-bulbs. However, because of their structure and material, much of the light in standard LEDs becomes trapped, reducing the brightness of the light and making them unsuitable as the main lighting source in the home.

New Bans on Plastic Bags May Help Protect Marine Life
China’s surprise crackdown on plastic bags, announced on Tuesday, will prohibit the production and distribution of ultra-thin bags beginning June 1. The ruling bans the manufacture, sale, and use of plastic bags under 0.025 millimeters thick and prohibits supermarkets and shops nationwide from handing out the sacks for free. With the move, China joins a growing list of regions, from San Francisco to South Africa, that are using taxes, bans, and other regulations to try to decrease the prevalence of the ubiquitous bags.

WEF warns 2008 uncertainties may hit climate efforts
An increased focus on turbulent financial markets and escalating geopolitical tensions in 2008 could prompt governments and firms to neglect less immediate risks like climate change, the World Economic Forum warned. That, it said on Wednesday, could make it even harder to deal with these critical longer-term issues in the future.

Cleantech funding rising, may overvalue sector: VCs
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Egged on by $100-a-barrel oil and consumers going green, venture capitalists plan to pour ever more cash into environmentally friendly technology this year, prompting talk of a bubble reminiscent of the dot-com era. Some 61 percent of 170 venture capitalists reached by one survey said they believe the inflow of venture dollars into "cleantech" would overvalue the sector, even though many remain convinced of its long-term potential.

Sierra Club sues Shell over refinery pollution
HOUSTON (Reuters) - The Sierra Club, the largest and oldest U.S. environmental organization, filed a federal lawsuit on Monday against Shell Oil Co and subsidiaries over pollution at a refining and chemical plant complex along the Houston Ship Channel. Shell could face a maximum fine of $32,500 for each of an estimated 1,000 incidents between 2003 and 2007 when the Deer Park, Texas, refinery and chemical plant exceeded levels of pollution allowed under permits issued by Texas regulators.
