On December 7, 1972 at 5:39 a.m (EST), photograph @AS17-148-22727 was taken and launched a global movement for sustainability.  The iconic image of Earth snapped from aboard Apollo 17’s flight to the moon illuminated the Earth’s fragility, isolation and beauty; and awakened global consciousness and concern for a sustainable future.  Today more than ever, that image generates a sense of urgency and need for bold action.

The Global EC Community Summits are a cooperative effort to celebrate 2008 International Year of Planet Earth and to address climate change by bringing people together for dialogues and to take action within 30 cities around the globe.  The Summits will be connected via web technology.  The Earth Charter provides a prism for addressing the interconnected social, environmental and economic aspects of climate change.

Partners

United Nations-Habitat, Physicians for Social Responsibility, ICLEI-US, Northwest Earth Institute, Citizens’ Network for Sustainable Development, and U.S. Earth Charter Community Alliance.

What can citizens do about climate change?

After discussing the dangers, causes and possible solutions to climate change, the next question is: What can I do?

As an Earth Charter partner, the Citizens Network for Sustainable Development encourages Community Summit participants to endorse and implement the Citizens 5-Step Action Plan on Energy and Climate. In brief:

  1. Inform ourselves.
  2. Change our habits.
  3. Encourage our community leaders to take action.
  4. Call on national leaders to develop a National Strategy on Sustainable Energy.
  5. Participate in the national dialogue on sustainable energy and climate.

To help actualize this plan, use the Citizens Guide to Sustainable Energy . It is a tool for you to use and to help us develop even further for others in meeting this challenge!

Jeffrey Barber, National Coordinator
Citizens Network for Sustainable Development
