UT Grad Students Embrace Diversity to Help Build Sustainable Businesses

Sustainability. The word is popping up everywhere these days, and interest is growing in making everything more sustainable, from lawns to communities to businesses. But it doesn’t happen overnight. Cultivating a more sustainable world takes careful thought and creative collaboration among people with diverse values, backgrounds and experience. The development of the Earth Charter Sustainable Business Awards is a fascinating example of how very different people can work together toward a common goal that benefits all.

Sustainable Business Awards
ECUS is the national office for the Earth Charter in the United States and is an NGO Delegate to the United Nations’ Commission on Sustainable Development. The ECUS mission is to inspire, educate and engage people in making the Earth Charter’s vision and principles for sustainability a reality through policy initiatives, community actions, and lifestyle changes.  The Earth Charter is a global declaration and commitment for a sustainable future that was written by thousands of people in 78 countries over the course of ten years and launched at The Hague Peace Palace in 2000. The Earth Charter’s 16 principles provide an ethical framework for sustainability that include environmental, economic and social factors, participatory democracy and a culture of peace.

Through Augustine's Eyes: Acceptance

"What color is he?  Brown, Black or White?"  Not exactly a politically correct question but one asked with the innocence of a 2 1/2 year-old who was simply trying to get a clearer description of the person I was talking about.  Augustine is my White grand-daughter, now six years old,  who spent 9 hours a day from the age of one until four years old in a daycare center surrounded by mostly Black children and staff.  I was struck by the naturalness of the question.   It was a question asked completely for the sake of description like asking what color eyes does he have.  It was refreshing to hear the question without any valuation being placed on what the color might be.

Time: A Scene Stealer

A dear friend of mine is seriously ill.  She has been in and out of the hospital for six major operations in the past 5 months.  She is there now and finally today she came off of sedatives and was awake.  I struggled to squeeze in time to go see her this afternoon.  I love her and I’m ashamed that seeing her is not my first priority. I’m ashamed that I put working on my presentation for tomorrow’s meeting with the Tampa Tribune first.  I’m ashamed that I put a conference call with people at Harvard who are partnering with us for a workshop ahead of seeing her.   I’m ashamed that my deadline for a newsletter article came before her today.  What are my priorities?  What is going on with my time?  I feel like in this drama called life, time is a scene-stealer and robbing me of the joy of being on stage.
