Local Governments

  • Endorsement by several major cities including Seattle, Philadelphia and Santa Rosa, and one county (Ventura).
  • Corvallis, OR is using Earth Charter as framework for sustainability planning.

State

  • State-wide project in Indiana to recognize and promote organizations in Indiana that are incorporating sustainable practices for the purpose of providing sustainability models to make Indiana Sustainable by 2016.

Education

  • Integration of EC into public schools’ lesson plans, universities curricula and degree programs, and interfaith discussions
    • First EC Elementary School established in Arlington, VA in 2008.
    • Master Degree for Social Change based on Earth Charter being developed by National Louis University for 2011.
    • University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh Global Educator EC Certificate program & weeklong EC Summits
    • State University of New York at New Palz established a new student organization, Student Organization of Business Ethics & Research, based on the Earth Charter.
    • Adoption of Earth Charter by Episcopal Diocese in Seattle for interfaith discussions.
    • Integrated into mission and work of Inter-Religious Eco-Justice Council in Hartford, Connecticut.
    • Five-week Interfaith Study Guide developed in Louisville, Kentucky.
    • Interfaith Study Guide by Sisters of Notre Dame.
  • Community Initiatives for Replication include:
    • Earth Scouts for boys and girls ages 3 to 13 years launched in 2006. Groups in 25 states and3 countries in 2009.
    • EC Living Television Series produced for broadcast by community television stations around the country in 2007
    • ECUS Sustainable Business Awards in 2008
    • Development of ECUS Sustainable Business Coalition 2009
    • Model of Collaboration for Arts & Sustainability between ECUS, private and public educational institutions.
      • Partnership with University of Tampa Art Faculty and Students working with Academy Prep’s at-risk low income students on Earth Scouts Arts & Sustainability Festival on Earth Day 2010

    Global Initiatives

    Collaboration with Earth Charter International on plans to celebrate Earth Charter + 10 as follow up to launch of EC in 2000 at The Hague Peace Palace and to provide international audit of Earth Charter Footprint in people’s lives and organizations. ECUS will engage people to host at-home and community EC + 10 events across the United States and will offer EC assessment information and tracking for interested US individuals and organizations.

    Partnership with Workers Education Association in Zambia Africa to improve quality of life and to build sustainable economies initially in 2 villages with solar cookers, water purifiers and waterless toilets.
