First rains come to Haiti, more support will be needed

The first rains have come to Haiti, certain to complicate a country still struggling to overcome the devestation of the January 12th earthquake. While the rains are inevitable, many have been hoping that they would not come early this year. The first rains usually come in the spring and are then followed by hurricane season from July through November.

Union of Concerned Scientists Checks the Facts in Climate Change Report

Over the last couple of months there have been a number of accusations about the validity and rigor of the 2007 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Unfortunately, many of these accusations have focused on minor mistakes within the report, claiming that these small errors invalidate the entire 3,000 page report.

New power plant voluntarily requests carbon dioxide limits

Photo credit: Ian BurtonWhile many companies continue to fight regulations on carbon emissions, one Texas company that builds power plants around the country has requested that a carbon emissions limit be set on a new project outside of San Francisco. The company, Calpine, made the request for carbon emissions in anticipation of the Environmental Protection Agency issuing new rules limiting carbon emissions, and says that while voluntary, it is legally enforceable.

Coal is dirty. Mountaintop removal coal mining has devastated more than 380,000 acres of forest in Appalachia alone due to coal mining.1 This is land that will never return to what it was before, mountains blasted away, and stream beds filled with toxic valley fill. Between 1985 and 2001, 724 miles of streams were buried in Appalachia. However, this environmental harm has not stopped President Obama from supporting an energy policy that would include coal, coal that would come from these devastating mining practices.
